[edit] Database Description
The DEG Database of Essential Genes holds information on essential genes (those that are absolutely required for an organism to sustain cellular life) from a number of organisms.
The current release (3.2) contains information on 4528 essential genes from Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Vibrio cholerae, Escherichia coli, Haemophilus influenzae, Mycoplasma genitalium, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Helicobacter pylori, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Salmonella typhimurium.
Users can search genes by function and name and browse and extract information on the genes. A typical entry includes a database specific accession number, the common gene name, GI reference, function, organism, reference and nucleotide sequence. It is also possible to BLAST sequences of interest against the database.
DEG is hosted at the Centre of BioInformatics, Tianjin University
